Hot Summer Nights Festival Music Academy

June 23-29, 2014

hsnposterHot Summer Nights Festival Music Academy is a seven-day program of the Missouri Symphony Society presented during the Hot Summer Nights Festival. Held at the historic Missouri Theatre and other cooperating venues, students have the opportunity to further their love of music while sharpening their skills in a fun, supportive atmosphere.

Students enroll in one or two camp programs covering Orchestral, Choral, or Chamber Music. Participants perform side-by-side with the professional musicians of the Missouri Symphony Orchestra in concerts as a part of the Hot Summer Nights Festival.

Orchestral Program

for string, wind and brass instrumentalists and percussionists age 8-18

Activities: Orchestra rehearsal; classes in music theory, music history, and conducting; student recitals; two concert performances and other events.

Eligibility: String players must have reached at least Book 2 Suzuki method or be able to play in two sharps and two flats. Wind, brass and percussion players should have had at least one semester of experience in their school band program. Age range is 8-years-old through high school.

Faculty: The Orchestral Program is directed by Maestro Kirk Trevor, Music Director of the Missouri Symphony Orchestra and Missouri Symphony Conservatory orchestras. Outstanding teachers and coaches from the Missouri Symphony Orchestra and the University of Missouri School of Music provide class and small group instruction to students.

Chamber Music Program

a small ensemble experience for advanced instrumentalists, ages 12-18

Activities: Orchestra rehearsal; classes in music theory, music history, and conducting; student recitals; two concert performances and other events.

Eligibility: Students must have reached Book 4 Suzuki method or equivalent.

Choral Program

for students with unchanged treble voices beginning grades 6th through 12th in fall 2014

Activities: Choral rehearsal; classes in music theory, music history, and conducting; student recitals; two concert performances and other events.

Eligibility:  Students must have an unchanged treble voice and be beginning grades 6th through 12th in fall 2014.

Faculty: The Choral Program is directed by Melissa Straw, a 21-year veteran choral conductor who has conducted the Missouri Symphony Conservatory Children’s Chorus since 2003.

Camp Fees:

Orchestral or Choral only: $200
Chamber only: $100
Orchestral and Choral: $300
Orchestral and Chamber: $300

For families with more than one child participating, additional children receive a $25 discount.
